Foodjournalism in Czech newspapers betweenthe wars

In recent years, there is an apparent renaissance of the Czech cuisine, the "First Republic era" (1918 - 1938, CSR I) especially. Both chefs and journalists writing about cooking and dining are referring to the gastronomy of this time period more and more often and they are praising its quality and taste. However, there is no comprehensive publication about Czech gastronomy in 1918 - 1938 period, sparse references and notes can be found in witnesses commemorative volumes, from history of folklore and from the historical press, respectively. Based on the last especially, the image of "first republic" gastronomy is gradually puzzled out. Using a content analysis method, the four biggest newspapers (Lidové noviny, Národní listy, Český deník and Venkov) and eight women journals (Žena, Ženské listy, Ženské noviny, Ženský list, Rozsévačka, Česká Žena, Ženský svět and a "Československá žena" calendar) being published in examined period are investigated. Comparison of language and style of interviews in girls' and women's magazines

This bachelor thesis is focused on comparison of language and style of interviews in girl's and womens' magazines. The intention of this thesis is to find out the differences and correspondences between the both types of magazines. General characteristic of an interview summarizing the information about range, lead paragraphs and pictorial component is in the introduction part of the thesis. The first part of the thesis explores an interview from language aspect - the particular language levels are analyzed here. The second part of the thesis explores an interview from communication aspect - the relationships among participants of communication, ways of asking questions and ways of responsing to them are described here. The end of this thesis contains the summary of results from both mentioned aspects.
The use and function of persuasive language techniques in women's magazines

This thesis deals with persuasion and its means in the field of contemporary journalistic texts - women's magazines. By employing the approaches of critical analysis of discourse, it analyses selected verbal means, used for persuasive writing. Women's magazine "Žena a život" volumes 2010/13 are used as a case study example. The first theoretical part of this thesis deals with persuasion in terms of psychological communication of sociological and media studies. An analysis follows of women's magazines market in the Czech Republic and the specifics of women's and lifestyle magazines. In the practical part, by using 48 different samples of "žena a život" magazines editorials, women's magazines language is analysed. The thesis focuses on selected verbal means of persuasion and it analyses their usage and function in the text. Transformation of the approach to the gender roles in magazine Vlasta between 1991 and 2010

In my work I map the transformation of gender through media editorial in the journal Vlasta topics in 1991 and 2010 and how tthe communist regime influenced the thematic transformation of magazine in Czechoslovakia. In my work I also examine whether Vlasta magazine in 1991, presents a feminist ideas that have a negative connotation, as Osvaldová mentioned. The work is divided into three basic sections of theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse and puts the work in a social media context. This section presents the main concepts such as feminism, gender, gender stereotypes and patriarchy. It also mentions the importance of media and women's magazines for the female audience and the transformation of women's role in society before 1989 and after. In the methodological part, through open and axial coding I examine media content. In my research, I identify and describe significant editorial issues with which woman is associated in Vlasta magazine in 1991 and in 2010. Furthermore, using content analysis, I compare the contents of the magazine Vlasta 1991 and 2010 in terms of private and public spheres. Františka Plamínková As a Journalist, a Politician And a Feminist - a Biographical Research

This thesis deals with the life of Františka Plamínková (1875-1942) paying special attention to her role as a women's rights activist, politician and journalist. The study maps out Plamínková's journey to becoming one of the principal characters of the Czech women's movement before and after the First World War and her merits regarding the women's suffrage in Czechoslovakia in the appropriate historical context. Furthermore, it describes her politics in the Czechoslovak Senate as well as her other public activities, such as being the chairwoman of the Czech National Women's Council. It highlights Plamínková's fate during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, which ultimately led to her execution. The chapter dedicated to Plamínková's journalistic work analyses her texts published between 1906-1940 primarily in women's magazines, where Plamínková reflected on the period narrative concerning women and aimed to change their limited options within both their public and private lives. The premise of this thesis is that Plamínková projected her own experience and opinions into her journalistic body of work. The study is based in archival materials and sources, texts in period magazines and other studies related to the topic at hand. Enclosed are several period photographs and archival documents.
Feminists, Christians and women's magazines - construction of interpretative communities

Diploma thesis "Feminists, Christians and women's magazines - construction of interpretative communities" deals with opinions of feminist and Christian women about women's magazines. It applies the concept of interpretative communities on these two groups of women and asks, if feminists and Christians use within their groups the same resources for judgement of women's magazines. At the same time the thesis is concerned with the history of Czech women in the last two centuries and also with theoretical views of women and constructions of womanhood. It strives for a solid understanding of the two groups of women that includes not only the characteristics of both communities, but also social and historical circumstances that shaped them. On this basis, the thesis analyses interviews with feminist and Christian women. The themes that were discussed included fashion, cosmetics, relationships between men and women, atributes of gender roles, positives and negatives of women's magazines, various uses of women's magazines and Christian and feminist critique of women's magazines. The thesis also deals with the question, which other variables may influence the opinion of feminists and Christians on women's magazines.
Tranformation in Vlasta magazine 1988-1991

In the 70-year history of the weekly magazine Vlasta, there were three main divisions that fundamentally influenced the personnel department, as well as the choice of topics. This diploma thesis is focused in the years 1988-1991. That is, before and after the Velvet Revolution. After 1989 there were changes in the editorial office, changes in the topics of articles (influenced by propaganda) and changes in advertising and graphic design. This thesis deals with these three lines. The main goal is to find out how the working environment in the weekly magazine Vlasta has changed during the years under review and how did the content changed. The first part deals with the functioning of the editorial office two years before the change of régime and the subsequent change in the magazine environment after 1989. The thesis is focused on the work of individual editors, but also on what topics they chose and why.
